Battisborough House is a fine, south-facing, detached Victorianhouse with outstanding sea views. Owned and operated by Hall Grove as a residential Field Study Centre, it is located in an idyllic location overlooking the sea on the South Devon coast.

Originally built as a seaside family house, it was for 30 years a boarding school. Now it has been transformed back into a spacious, comfortable house with occasional reminders of its former purpose – i.e. some dormitories – ideal for the Harry Potter dream.

From Year 4, boys and girls visit Battisborough annually to carry out fieldwork projects. This has proved to be an excellent way of enriching their classroom studies and helps prepare them for Common Entrance and future exams.

In addition, the children learn about living away from home in a community, which is of enormous benefit to all boys and girls and of special importance to those going on to boarding senior school.

There are 6 acres of grounds, including a hard tennis court, a small football field, woodland for making dens and a large terrace which runs the length of the house.

Comments from a recent Year 7 trip to Battisborough House

“Norma cooked us a wonderful breakfast of sausages, scrambled eggs, hash browns and beans.”

“After lunch we went to Mothecombe Bay where we skimmed stones, looked in some rock pools and played on the beach.”

“Straight after we had the quiz where our group “The Lads” didn't exactly shine through and win. I must say congratulations to “The Cheesy Blobs”.

“It was our last full day at Battisborough and it was to be the best. We started off with a bit of work. When this was done we visited and concluded our project at Plymouth Broadway and Plymouth city centre. However, the highlight of the day came when we went ice skating and swimming.”

“The ice-skating was the best bit. At the beginning I was clinging on to the side like Mr Lewis but then I got the hang of it.”

“We arrived back home exhausted and tired, and then we remembered we still had a football match to play!”

“I had a great time and I can’t wait until next year.”

“I’ll be sad after my final visit next year!!”
